In 2009, an international team led by Johan Rockström introduced the planetary boundaries framework: nine Earth-system processes that define a safe operating space for humanity. If we stay within these limits, we preserve a stable climate and biosphere. If we overshoot them, we risk triggering irreversible tipping points.
